Humane Society of Summit County seeks adopters for dogs rescued from South Korea, Lebanon

TWINSBURG, Ohio – The Humane Society of Summit County is seeking adopters for six dogs rescued from South Korea and Lebanon through its partnership with Humane Society International.

Five of the dogs were rescued from a dog meat farm in South Korea. The sixth dog came from Lebanon, where it had been left without a home due to an explosion.

The dogs arrived at the humane society in mid-November. Since then, they have received socialization, behavioral support and medical care, including being spayed or neutered, fitted with microchips for identification and received routine vaccinations.

The five dogs rescued from South Korea include two Tosas, large mastiff-like dogs with short red and black fur, and three Jindos, a medium-sized hunting dog with tan fur. Four of the five dogs are available for adoption: Anderson, Havana, Jin, and Dorothy. Teddy is receiving treatment for a heartworm infection and will remain at the humane society during treatment.

The dogs were among 200 rescued by Humane Society International from South Korean dog meat farms and were brought to the United States. Dog meat farming is legal in South Korea, and more than 2 million dogs are raised as livestock in unsanitary conditions, according to the humane society. Humane Society International is working with dog meat farmers to end the practice by helping farmers find other livelihoods.

The sixth dog available for adoption came from the rescue partnership is a Siberian Husky named Talej. Talej was rescued after an explosion in the Port of Beirut in August. The explosion killed nearly 200 people and displaced hundreds of thousands of residents. Pets were also displaced and injured as a result of the explosion. Through its partnership with Animals Lebanon, Humane Society International was able to transport pets displaced from the explosion to the U.S.
