All about the General Assembly in the US State of Maryland The state of Maryland is basically one of the smallest state of the country of the United States of America, and this state is situated in the Mid-Atlantic region of the said country, and borders the other states, such as the Virginia, Washington D.C. and West Virginia to its south and west, Delaware to its east, and to its north, is the state of Pennsylvania. The US state of Maryland’s largest city is the city of Baltimore, and its capital city is called as the city of Annapolis. The state of Maryland is basically recognized as the place of birth of America’s religious freedom, which is why the state is called in various nicknames, such as the Chesapeake Bay State, the Old Line State, and the Free State. The government in the state of Maryland is the same with the government of the other forty-nine states of the country of the United States of America, and such is conducted and administered according to the state constitution. The general assembly of the state of Maryland is composed of the state legislature and legislative body of the said state and that convenes and opened within the State House of the state’s capital city. The Maryland general assembly is basically composed of two houses, namely the lower chamber, which is also referred to as the house of delegates, along with its representatives; and the upper chamber, which is also referred to as the house of the senate, together with their representatives, and because of that the Maryland general assembly is also recognized as a bicameral body. The functions of these two houses include judging the qualifications of their members, punishing or expelling their members, and establishing rules for the conduct of its business. In order to be qualified as a senator or delegate, they should be a citizen of the state of Maryland, a resident for at least a year prior to his or her election, and the qualified age for a senator should be at least twenty-five years old and a delegate should be at least twenty-one years old. Each of the elected officials will basically work in a four-year term, but in instances wherein the position will be unoccupied due to a member’s resignation, death or disqualification, the one who has the power to assign a new member to occupy the said position is called as the governor. The official who led the lower chamber or the house of the delegates is called as the speaker, while in the upper chamber or the house of the senator is called as the president, and these leaders have their own responsibilities duties and prerogatives the allows and enables them to have an influence in the legislation process.
